- 1). Pop the hood of your Jetta. The battery is located in the engine compartment, on the driver's side of the engine block directly behind the headlight compartment.
- 2). Loosen the nut holding the negative (black) terminal clamp to the negative attachment on the battery. The negative battery terminal is the grounding terminal. Removing it will make your battery dead, and protect you from shock.
- 3). Remove the terminal clamp from the negative attachment completely. Bend the wires back to ensure that the clamp will not make contact with the battery attachment.
- 4). Loosen the nut holding the positive (red) terminal clamp to the positive attachment on the battery. The positive terminal clamp is the live wire on your battery, so handle it with care.
- 5). Remove the terminal clamp from the positive attachment completely.
- 6). Lift the battery out of the housing compartment using the plastic handle or lifting points over the top or on the side of the battery to get a firm grip when lifting. The Jetta's TDI 101 battery weighs approximately 12 lbs., so lifting it straight up and out of the compartment can be tricky without the proper leverage.
