How to Fix Subwoofer Lead Wires

    • 1). Heat up the soldering iron to its normal operating temperature. This is typically indicated by a small amber light turning off. Wipe the soldering iron on the solder station's damp sponge to remove residual oxidation.

    • 2). Flip the subwoofer cone-down, revealing the magnet and speaker wire connectors. Touch the hot iron against the remaining solder that formerly held the tinsel lead in place.

    • 3). Wipe away the solder as it melts away with the solder wick. Use caution as to not accidentally melt any surrounding plastic on the woofer's hardware or the woofer's actual cone material.

    • 4). Remove the small broken section of the tinsel lead, formerly attached to the speaker wire terminal. Snip a short section of new tinsel lead, just long enough to allow full travel of the subwoofer's cone. Examine the other intact tinsel lead for reference.

    • 5). Fray the end of the intact section of the broken tinsel lead, and one end of the new short piece. Mesh the frayed ends together, gently twisting them to join them together.

    • 6). Brush a small amount o solder flux over the braided join. Hold just below the join with the needle-nose pliers while you heat the lead with the soldering iron.

    • 7). Apply a small bead of solder to the braided join, allowing it to flow through the twisted braid. Apply a second small bead of solder at the speaker wire terminal. Allow the solder to cool for a few minutes prior to reinstalling the subwoofer.
