How to Replace the Battery in a Pontiac Grand Am

    • 1). Remove the cables from the battery terminals with a battery terminal puller or socket wrench.

    • 2). Lift the battery out of the compartment. Keep your gloves on at all times to avoid getting acid on your hands. Safely dispose of the battery at an auto parts store or a recycling center.

    • 3). Use a wire brush to clean the surface that holds the battery. Clean the insides of the connector cables with a pointed wire brush. Wear goggles or glasses to avoid acid splash in your eyes.

    • 4). Wipe the cables and the battery tray with a damp cloth and let them dry out. Use a rag that you can throw away since it will be covered with acid.

    • 5). Place the new battery on the shelf. Place the correct cable on each terminal and tighten them securely with pliers or a socket wrench.
