How to Find and Reset the Keyless Entry Code for a '96 Ford Taurus

    Locating the Factory Code

    • 1). Locate the keyless entry junction box under the steering column. The box can be identified by its gray plastic shell; all other components around it are black.

    • 2). Locate the junction box information sticker which is typically located on the side of the box that faces away from the steering wheel, so a flashlight and hand mirror may be necessary to see the sticker.

    • 3). Write down the five-digit number printed near the upper right corner of the sticker. The number is printed in a larger font than the rest of the information on the sticker, setting it apart visually. This number is the factory-installed code for the car and can be used by itself or as a means of reprogramming the user code.

    Resetting the User Code

    • 1). Enter the five-digit factory code into the entry keypad on the Ford Taurus. If the car is locked, the driver side door will unlock once the code is entered.

    • 2). Press the "1/2" key within five seconds of entering the factory code. This puts the keyless entry system into reprogramming mode, allowing you to enter a new user code.

    • 3). Type in a new five-digit code. Your Ford Taurus will record this new code over the previous user code. The factory code will remain unchanged.

    • 4). Lock the Taurus, then enter your new user code. If the code was recorded correctly, the driver side door will unlock. If the door does not unlock, repeat the process of reprogramming the user code and test it again.
