- 1). Clean each leather shoe. Combine the hot water and dish detergent to create a sudsy mixture. With your cloth, rub back and forth with a lot of force and friction to remove dirt and oils. A toothbrush can be used in certain areas where dirt may have built up and is tough to remove.
- 2). Lightly brush the new shoe dye over the shoes going in one direction. You do not want any overlap of color, since that will cause some spots to be darker than others. Wait for this first coat, or your primer coat, to dry completely. This should take about 30 minutes.
- 3). Apply the second coat of dye the same way as you did the first. Wait another 30 minutes and only apply a third coat if you can see through the color or some spots are uneven.
- 4). Allow the shoes to dry for at least one hour, but wait two hours to be safe. Do not touch the leather during its drying time.
- 5). Finish each shoe off with a coat of shoe polish. When you apply the polish, you should not see any of the shoe color rubbing off. If it does, the dye did not dry completely.
