- 1). Wash and condition the hair. Comb it straight back from the face, so it falls down the hairstyle wearer’s back. Spread a heat protectant hair product on your hands, and work it through the hair.
- 2). Place the comb at the spot where the part between the buns should be – it may be a side part, a middle part or a horizontal part around the head if the buns are to be one on top of the other.
- 3). Run the comb along the length of where you want the part to go, separating the two sections of hair with your free hand as you move the comb. Gather a section in one hand, and loosely tie it with a metal-free hair tie.
- 4). Comb your fingers through the untied section of hair to loosen the hair from how it was combed. Draw out a 2- to 4-inch section of the hair. Place a paddle-shaped, boar-bristle brush on the small section of hair, at the scalp, and place the blow dryer on the top of that section of hair, directly above the brush. Tilt the blow dryer so it’s facing downward, so it will blow the hair shaft down – that will make for sleeker hair. Run the brush and blow dryer down the section of hair at the same time, moving slowly but not so slowly that the hair seems to burn or the scalp gets too hot. Repeat until the entire untied section of hair is straight and dry. Gather that section loosely in a hair tie, and repeat the drying and straightening process for the second section.
- 5). Pull out the hair tie from one section of hair. Spread a dime-sized amount of hair gel on your hands, and work it through the hair. Comb the hair in the general direction it will have to go in for the bun, but don’t tie it up in a hair tie yet. Spread hair polish on your hands, and put the hair tie at your wrist. Gather the hair together in the spot where you want the bun to be, in a series of long, smoothing motions – allow the process to take as long as it needs to until the hair is covered in the hair polish and it is gathered smoothly together where the bun will be. Repeat the process for the second section of hair.
- 6). Grasp one ponytail at the end of the hair, and twirl the hair until it’s in a tight twist. Wrap the hair around the base of the ponytail until it’s in a tight coil. Tuck the end of the hair underneath the coil, and secure it in place with a bobby pin (use more pins if necessary). Repeat for the second ponytail. Spray a thin, diffuse layer of hairspray over the entire style to hold it in place.
