Shaving Tips For Beginners

For most men and male teens, shaving is a necessity. Society is more accepting of those who look neat and presentable. This does not mean that one must be clean shaven, but it does mean that a mustache and/or beard should be kept neat and trimmed. And areas of the face not covered by the intentional hair should be shaved. The basics of shaving are pretty much learned when a boy becomes a teen. And he is expected to continue to shave for almost the rest of his life.

There are two instruments used for shaving. One is the traditional, plain razor and one is the electric razor. An electric razor is sometimes more comfortable, and it is faster, but it also does not shave as closely. For men who prefer a closer, smoother shave that takes longer to begin growing back (giving a five oclock shadow), the plain razor is preferred. Others combine the two, going over the face once with the electric razor and then getting close with the plain razor. This is often a good idea for someone who is getting rid of a beard or mustache he has had for a while. If the hair is especially long, though, one should use small scissors to carefully trim it to a more manageable length before starting. Getting the hairs relatively short before shaving can prevent discomfort from longer hairs pulling.

When you are ready to begin, you should rinse your face with hot or warm water. The warm water opens your pores, softening the hairs and making it easier to get a closer shave. Many men prefer to shave right after a shower, when their faces have less oil and when the pores have had plenty of time to open. This will also reduce the discomfort that can sometimes be associated with shaving.

If you are using an electric razor, go ahead and get started. If you make use of a plain razor, it is time to apply the shaving gel. Quirt it into your hand first and then cover the sides of your face, around your mouth, the chin, the throat, and the neck. It is a good idea to start with the sides of your face when you are beginning. The skin there is smoother and easier to shave. Make sure that you follow the direction of your hair when you shave. After you finish with the sides of your face, it is time to move on to the trickier areas. You can use one hand to try and pull your skin smoother to make it easier. Use short strokes, and by especially careful around your mouth and your chin.

After you complete your shave, use cold water to rinse your face. The cold water will close up your pores, helping to prevent the entrance of dirt, dust, and oil. These are things that can clog pores and cause zits. Many men use aftershave as a further disinfectant and to add a nice smell. You will shave every one to three days, depending on how fast your hair grows back.
