- 1). Slide the "hold" button on your iPod to the on position and then back to the "off" position. Immediately after this, hold down the "menu" and "select" buttons at the same time until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
- 2). Connect the iPod to your computer using the USB cable that came with the device. If you still receive an error message, try inserting the cable into an alternate USB port on your computer.
- 3). Load iTunes while your iPod is connected to the computer. Make sure to download the latest version of iTunes from Apple.com using the link in the Resources section. In addition, be sure to obtain the latest firmware for your iPod by clicking the iPod icon in the left pane of the iTunes window and choosing "Update" from the screen that appears in the left pane. Restart your computer if necessary.
- 4). Uninstall iTunes by going to "Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs." Find iTunes and choose "Remove." Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the uninstall procedure. Don't worry, your music, videos and pictures in iTunes are safely backed up on your hard drive. Download and install the newest version of iTunes and try again to connect the iPod to your computer.
- 5). Back up all files on the iPod to your computer by syncing your device. Connect the iPod to your computer and open the latest version of iTunes. Click the iPod icon in the left pane of iTunes and select the "Restore" button, which will appear in the right pane of iTunes. Doing this will delete everything on your iPod and should only be done as a last resort. When the restore operation is finished, you will have to rename your iPod and upload your music files again, as if it were brand new.
