- It's important to troubleshoot the problem first before you let your battery drain--you may not even need to drain your iPod's battery. Move the hold switch back and forth once your iPod has started to freeze up. Continue pressing the play button as well. Plug your iPod into a charger or to your computer using the USB connector if the iPod continues to not work. Allow it to charge for at least five minutes. If it is still frozen then unplug from the charger so that you start to let the battery drain.
- The sooner that your battery drains then the quicker you will be able to plug your iPod into a charger or connect it to your computer. Press the "Play" button on your iPod to see if you can get a song to play. Set your iPod aside and let it play until the battery fully dies. For a quicker method, go to the main menu of your iPod if you are able to and then click on the "Shuffle Songs" option. Click on the right "Forwards" button to skip to the next song. Continue skipping through all of your songs in shuffle mode until your battery fully dies. Track the power left in your battery by looking at the battery icon at the top right corner of your iPod screen. This method allows your battery to die quicker as you force the iPod to go through its memory.
- Connect your iPod to your computer using the USB connector and open iTunes on your computer. Click on your iPod icon in iTunes and then click on the "Update" button. Updating your iPod should help fix the problem that caused your iPod to originally freeze. If you're iPod won't appear in your iTunes you should go to the Mac Support website to contact a representative for help. You final option may be to send your iPod to be fixed, which will be free if your iPod is still under warranty.
