There is no disputing the fact that if we eat too much we gain weight.
And it's so easy to overeat.
In order to figure out how to stop overeating, it would probably help to figure out why we overeat in the first place.
One cause of overeating is waiting too long to eat.
When we get really hungry, we eat faster than usual in order to fill ourselves up quickly.
Because we're eating so fast we often end up consuming more than we need to, before our brain tells us to stop.
And let's not forget that when we're too hungry, we tend to eat whatever we can get our hands on.
Often this is high calorie junk food.
A simple solution is to eat a healthy snack between meals so you're never feeling starved.
You'll find it much easier to avoid overeating if you never let yourself get too hungry.
Another cause of overeating is "mindless eating".
This is when you eat without really paying attention to what you're eating.
Think about dipping your hand into a bag of potato chips while watching a movie.
You probably weren't really thinking about the chips but they disappeared anyway.
A way to break the mindless eating habit is to consciously bring your attention to your eating.
You can do this by only bringing a small amount of your favorite snack into the room where you are watching that movie.
If you leave the rest of the bag in the kitchen you are forcing yourself to think about how much you are consuming.
When the bowl is empty you have to decide whether to get up and get more.
Believe it or not this helps to break the habit of mindless eating, according to studies that have been conducted.
By understanding why we overeat we may have an easier time figuring out how to stop overeating.
Since eating too much can result in weight gain, it stands to reason that cutting back on overeating may result in weight loss.
