How to Change Name After Marriage

    • 1). Ask for additional certified copies of your marriage certificate. This is the most important documentation you will need in order to properly and legally change your name.

    • 2). Make a stop at your local Social Security office. Bring a copy of your ID and your marriage certificate. They will walk you through the necessary paperwork needed. Within 10 days of filing your paperwork, the Social Security Administration will notify the Internal Revenue Service of your name change.

    • 3). Update your driver's license. Bring your marriage license as proof of your new name. While you're there, ask what you need to do to change your vehicle title/registration.

    • 4). Remember to change your name with your place of employment, schools, banks, credit card companies, insurance, doctors and utility companies.
