What Can I Use to Get Rid of Stretch Marks?

    Surgical Procedures

    • Two simple procedures a dermatologist performs may be the quickest ways to rid yourself of stretch marks, but they are also the most expensive.

Dermabrasion is a procedure during which the skin is frozen and a device is used to "sand" the skin, according to MedicineNet.com. A new layer of skin then replaces the sanded off skin, giving it a smoother appearance and hopefully removing the layer that contained the stretch mark.

Chemical peels are applied to the skin to cause blistering, and the blistered skin is then peeled off. The new layer of exposed skin is usually smoother and younger looking and could be without noticeable stretch marks. Keep in mind that the new skin in these procedures is more sensitive to sunlight and must be carefully protected, especially in the days immediately following the procedure.

    Vitamin E

    • Vitamin E refers to a set of eight fat-soluble vitamins with antioxidant properties. Vitamin E-enriched creams and capsules are available in many nonprescription forms and are said to help the skin recover from the scarring of stretch marks.
Vitamin E helps the skin by eliminating free radicals that break down collagen in the skin. Collagen and elastin, according to AllAboutStretchMarks.com, provide the basic framework for healthy skin, and Vitamin E will help keep that framework intact as long as possible.

    Prevention

    • As is the case in many conditions, the best way to fight it is to never get it. Prevention is sometimes what we think about after it's too late, but prevention of stretch marks can be obtained by a few simple healthy living rules.

Remain hydrated and avoid caffeine. If you drink caffeine, which will increase the likelihood of stretch marks, then at least make sure you are drinking as much or more water than you do caffeine to balance it out. This includes coffee, tea and soda among others.

Eat food rich in antioxidants like the ones in Vitamin E. Such foods include nuts, green leafy vegetables, peanut butter, fortified cereals and many more. If you are getting 10 mg or more of Vitamin E daily, you probably won't have to worry about a supplement.
