How to Plant a Great Gunnera

    • 1). Locate a sunny location on your property that has moist, well-drained soil. Gunneras grow best in full sunlight but will tolerate partial shade. However, the plant may not grow as fast or as large when planted in shady locations. Areas near streams or garden ponds are ideal for gunnera plants.

    • 2). Mix in organic compost with the parent soil in a 5-foot radius from the planting location. Organic compost provides additional nutrients to support healthy gunnera development. Organic compost also retains soil moisture, a key component of growing healthy gunneras.

    • 3). Sow gunnera seeds in early spring. The seeds germinate quickly once the soil temperatures reach 70 degrees Fahrenheit at the planting location.

    • 4). Maintain soil moisture with regular watering during the first season's growth. Gunneras require consistently moist soils to grow; they turn yellow and die back if the soil dries out.

    • 5). Fertilize the plants with a slow-release, general garden fertilizer. Gunneras are heavy feeders and require supplemental nutrients to reach their full potential in most gardens. Follow the fertilizer instructions on the label to prevent over fertilizing your plants and causing algal problems in nearby aquatic environments.
