- 1). Clear your garden plot of any large sticks, stones or other debris that might interfere with tilling.
- 2). Roll your tiller to one corner of your plot, pointed toward the garden area. Move the metal rod near the front of the tiller to adjust the depth setting to 6 to 8 inches.
- 3). Start the tiller. For most models, this process is similar to starting a lawnmower or chainsaw.
- 4). Push the tiller in a straight line along the edge of your garden plot. Move slowly, adjusting the motor speed as necessary. The soil should be well broken as the tiller moves past it. Turn at the end of the row and return, tilling the line next to the line you tilled, and continue until you've completely tilled the garden plot.
- 5). Level off the garden plot with a rake. If you intend to plant in rows, you can hoe the rows in place at this time.
