- This training level is limited to the manufacturer's operations and maintenance manuals. Class I lasers include CD players, CD-ROM devices and some geological survey equipment. No other training is necessary to work with Class I lasers.
- In addition to reading the manufacturer's manuals, workers using Class II, IIA and IIIA lasers must also undergo training emphasizing basic safety protocols. These protocols must highlight the hazards of using lasers emitting IR. Lasers in these classes include laser pointers and laser scanners.
- Employers of operators, technicians and maintenance personnel working with Class IIIB and Class IV lasers must provide training that includes procedures for the proper operation of lasers and safety protocols. Employers must furnish safety equipment and instruct their workers on the use of this equipment. Lasers in Classes IIIB and IV include those used in spectrometry, entertainment light shows and medical surgery.
- Each facility working with lasers must appoint a Laser Safety Officer. This officer must undergo intensive training that reviews OSHA safety requirements and procedures involved in maintaining industry standards.
