Unique Natural Products:
As a big fan of virtually anything green, cleaning products are tops on my list, especially as these pertain to pets.
I recently received some Pet Odor and Stain Eliminator products from a Colorado-based company called Unique Natural Products, which specializes in all-natural cleaning products for a variety of uses: Water Stain Eater; Marine Digest-It, for use in boat holding tanks; Wine Stain Eater; Drain & Septic, for septic tanks, cesspools and lagoons; Grease & Grime, to clean sidewalks, barbecue grills, outdoor furniture, tools and mechanical equipment; Skunk Odor Eliminator; and others.First, let's meet the company.A Company that Was Green Before It Was CoolUnique Natural Products was launched in 1987 by a chemical salesman named Don Stewart, who inadvertently came up with a formula for a carpet cleaning product that was not only made from safe, all-natural ingredients, it worked. In those days, green products were not even on most people's radars.
But Stewart, who was 60 at the time, so believed in the future of this market that he hit the road in his RV for a 10-month nationwide trek to introduce his product to retailers. His hard work, enthusiasm and the quality of his product paid off: Within five years, hundreds of retailers across the country were selling Unique Natural Products.Through the years, Stewart has grown his line to include the aforementioned products, which eventually expanded to cleaning products for the pets sector.Going Green for PetsAs I have mentioned previously, and this is something a lot and pet parents don't realize, is that the products one uses around the house can have an effect on a pet's overall health and wellbeing. As someone who is mom to a cat that suffers from inflammatory bowel disease and periodic seizures, I have long been especially concerned about my home environment as it relates to his health.Plus, he chews on and licks everything in his path, including the floors, cabinets, windows, shoes, clothing, people, other pets and anything else that remains stationery for any length of time.
(He either really loves everyone and everything, or he simply wants to taste all that life has to offer… LOL!)In addition, Omar tends to vomit quite frequently, which leaves difficult to remove stains on furniture and carpets. So I have long used green and other non-toxic cleaning products around my home. The good news is, I felt a lot more confident about the safety of these products as these pertained to my pet, and the environment. The not so good news is that these products didn't always work that well. That's why I was especially intrigued by this particular line of green cleaning products, which the makers claim work very well. Here is what I found.Omar Puts these Products to the TestI immediately had the opportunity to use these products after Omar barfed on a brand new off-white loveseat my mom purchased in summer 2012 when my parents redecorated their summer vacation home at the seashore, where Omar and I live year-round.Why anyone would select white furnishings for a casual vacation home that also happens to be occupied by a black cat is beyond me. Be that as it may, it didn't take long for Omar to toss his cookies (actually, a huge black fur ball) in the middle of the love seat one fine day.I initially attempted to clean this the safe, old-fashioned way, by blotting up the debris, removing the excess with a rag soaked in cold water, then cleaning the stain with mild liquid soap. When that didn't work, out of desperation, I resorted to using a leading upholstery cleaner. That didn't work, either, and I was left with a huge water stain in the middle of the loveseat.I was rather in a panic because my parents were coming to visit, and I knew my mom would not be pleased about the massive stain in the middle of the brand new furniture. Well, it just so happened that I had recently received samples of the Pet Odor and Stain Eliminator. But Do These Highly Touted Green Cleaning Products Work? The company sent me two different products from this line: a ready-to-use formula, and a concentrate that is to be diluted with water. The ingredients are water, non-pathogenic bacteria and less than 1 percent of the following:
- Biodegradable surfactant (a foaming agent)
- Opacifier
- Natural perfume
- Carpets
- Hardwood floors
- Furniture fabric
- Bedding
- Clothing
- Vehicle interiors and…more.
