The Best Way to Clear Frozen Rain Gutters on Houses

    Heat-Gun Technique

    • 1). Connect a heat gun to an extension cord and plug the other end into an exterior ground-fault-interrupter (GFI) outlet.

    • 2). Prop a ladder against the house. Make sure it is secure and on level ground. Have an assistant hold and steady the ladder while you climb it.

    • 3). Locate the area where the ice has accumulated. Put on gloves and turn on the heat gun. Move it back and forth under the area for several minutes. Do not hold the gun in one spot too long, as this can cause damage to the rain gutter.

    • 4). Take a flat-head screwdriver and gently pick away at the ice to break it apart and loose from the rain gutter. If it does not budge, continue to heat the underneath side of the gutter until you can break the ice loose and into pieces.

    • 5). Remove the pieces by hand. Move on to the next area where ice has accumulated. Repeat this process until the rain gutter is ice-free.

    Pantyhose Technique

    • 1). Cut the legs off a pair of pantyhose. Tie one end of a leg with a piece of string. Fill the leg with calcium-chloride ice-melting pellets. Tie the other end.

    • 2). Prop a ladder against the house. Make sure it is secure and on level ground. Have an assistant hold and steady the ladder while you climb it.

    • 3). Locate the area on the rain gutter where ice has accumulated. Place the filled leg on top of the frozen area.

    • 4). Repeat this process until all areas have a filled leg on top.

    • 5). Periodically check the gutters and when they are free of ice, remove the homemade ice-melting devices.
