Brown"s Natural Herbs N Hay Edible Tunnel

About.com Rating

Small animals like guinea pigs, chinchillas, and rabbits need hay as a regular part of their diet. They also love to chew and hide as part of their daily routines.

I have two guinea pigs, and I enjoy giving them toys that play into their natural instincts. The Brown's Natural Herbs N Hay Edible Tunnel fits right into their love of chewing and hiding in tunnels. Since it's made from alfalfa hay, it's also fine if they ingest it.

A New Tunnel for My Piggies

My two guinea pigs, Amy and Quinn, love tunnels. They have Ware Fun Tunnels and Flex-E Fun-Nels to play with in their cage and play pen. I also give them other items like the Corn N Straw Tunnel that are meant to be chewed up and destroyed.

I was very excited when I had an opportunity to review the Brown's Natural Herbs N Hay Edible Tunnel because it looked like something they would love. It's big enough for them to crawl inside, and it's made of compressed alfalfa hay and parsley for safe chewing fun.

Instant Attraction

Amy and Quinn are spoiled guinea pigs and know that when I put something new in their cage, it's probably something good for them. They came right over to inspect the Brown's Natural Herbs N Hay Edible Tunnel, and both girls starting going through it. They both decided to gnaw on it enthusiastically, too.

I left the new tunnel in their cage, and I'd periodically see them gnawing on it when I was in the room. That evening, when I cleaned the cage, I could tell someone had been hiding out in it because of the guinea pig poopies inside.

Their interest in the Brown's Natural Herbs N Hay Edible Tunnel continued, and they're been chewing it, hiding, and sleeping in it ever since. It's actually holding up very well to their sharp little teeth.

The girls love to chew on their plastic tunnels, which always makes me worry. I really like this tunnel as a safe alternative.

Not Part of the Diet

Obviously, even though the Brown's Natural Herbs N Hay Edible Tunnel is made from alfalfa hay, you shouldn't consider it as part of your rabbit, guinea pig, or chinchilla's diet. View it as a play item, as compressed hay isn't a nutritious part of a small animal's diet like the nice, fresh variety.

The good thing about Brown's Natural Herbs N Hay Edible Tunnel is that it's safe for your pet to chew and ingest. Although my guinea pigs love their Ware Edible Twig Tunnel, which is woven from willow twigs, the sticks sometimes get sharp, and I worry that their mouths or bodies might get poked. There's no way the Brown's tunnel can get sharp edges.

Good for All Small Animals

The tunnel is sized perfectly to fit guinea pigs and chinchillas, but it would be too small for larger rabbits. Bunnies can still have fun chewing it and tossing it around.

You can buy Brown's Natural Herbs N Hay Edible Tunnel at Petco and other stores, either in person or online. You might want to get it from a store the first time you buy it so you get a visual idea of the size if you have a rabbit. Expect this to be a wear item, since your pet will likely have a great time chewing it to bits.
