How to Keep a Laptop From Overheating With a Fan

    • 1). Turn the laptop off. Remove the power cord from the laptop.

    • 2). Locate the fan grates on the laptop. The fan grates allow air to flow from the laptop and are located either on the bottom or sides of the laptop. Wipe down the air grates with an alcohol wipe to remove dust and build-up.

    • 3). Spray compressed air onto the fan through the air grates. This will remove dust and build-up, which can keep the fan from properly working.

    • 4). Wipe the fan grates with the alcohol wipe to remove any dust that may have blown on them.

    • 5). Turn the laptop on. You can run the laptop using battery power or plug in the power cord to use electric power. If you notice your laptop is still hot, or shuts down from overheating, proceed to the next step.

    • 6). Purchase a notebook or laptop cooler. A notebook or laptop cooler is an item placed under a laptop to help control the laptop's temperature. It contains one to two fans housed in a unit with slots or perforated holes to allow air to flow.

    • 7). Insert the notebook cooler cord into the USB port onto the laptop. Place the cooler underneath the laptop. Turn the laptop on. Once the laptop is powered on, the fans will begin blowing air.
