- 1). Determine the type of processor you want to use and visit Gateway to ensure the BIOS are available to support the CPU. Some retailers will not allow return of computer components. Back up the information and important documents on your hard drive.
- 2). Shut down the system by clicking the "Start" button and then choosing "Turn Off Computer". Close the LCD monitor and remove any external peripheral devices such as memory cards. Unplug the AC power adapter, turn the laptop over and remove the battery.
- 3). Open the memory upgrade socket bay at the bottom of the notebook to gain access to the motherboard and CPU housing. Loosen the five screws that are securing the bay. Be careful as the screws cannot be removed. Remove the bay cover from the laptop casing.
- 4). Unscrew the heat sink from the motherboard in order to gain access to the processor. Unlock the CPU and lift it out of the socket. Be careful to avoid damage to any pins when removing the processor.
- 5). Insert the new CPU carefulyl by lining up the pins from the processor and the holes in the socket. Reconnect the heat sink to the mother board.
- 6). Put the cover back over the memory module bay and tighten the five screws. Insert the battery and plug in the AC adapter. Power on the notebook and let it load Windows. Verify the processor information in the systems information screen.
