How to Soften Red Beans

    • 1). Pour the red beans in a colander and rinse under running water and you stir them with your hands. Remove any beans that look off and any debris. Most commercial dried beans won't need much picking, but be sure they're well-washed.

    • 2). Transfer the red beans from the colander to the pot. Cover the beans with water by 1 inch.

    • 3). Place the pot over high heat and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 1 hour, or remove the pot from the heat, cover and allow the beans to soak for a minimum of 2 hours.

    • 4). After soaking, drain the beans in the colander when they're about twice their original size. Rinse with water before using.
