Troubleshoot Electric Dryer Motors

    • 1). Determine whether you have a motor or a belt problem. If the dryer is still throwing off heat but the drum isn't turning, there could be a problem with the motor. Turn your dryer on. If it is silent, you may have a motor problem. If there is a humming motor like running sound, you have a belt problem.

    • 2). Check the wall socket where the dryer is plugged in. Use your voltage tester and test the actual wall socket where the dryer is plugged into. A breaker may have tripped, and that might be the cause of your problems.

    • 3). Remove the back of the dryer for further inspections. If you have power in the socket, then use your screwdriver and remove the back panel of your dryer. The motor will literally be directly behind the panel near the ground.

    • 4). Reset the dryer motor. Make sure the dryer is unplugged, then look for the small button on electric motors that acts like a mini circuit breaker. Generally, where the wires enter the unit, a small little red button will be sticking out in that same vicinity. Find the button, and push it back in.

    • 5). Test to determine if resetting fixed the problem. When the re-set button has been pushed, plug the dryer in and start it again. If there is no motor noise at all, the motor is burned out and needs to be replaced. If, however, there is a buzz to the motor and then suddenly the re-set button pops out again, there is another problem.

    • 6). Check the belt tensioner adjustment. The belt tensioner may be pulling the belt so tightly that the motor cannot turn. Use your spray lube and oil the hinges and springs of the tensioner. Make sure it pivots smoothly to keep the belt taught but not tight.

    • 7). Test the dryer again. Reset the button on the motor and turn on the dryer. If it now runs, you have fixed your problem.
