DIY: How to Fix a Washing Machine That Won't Spin

    • 1). Give the door a firm push to ensure it's completely closed. Almost all models of washing machine will wait until the door is closed before filling with water or spinning. Some models of top-load washer can be left open until the beginning of the spin cycle, when the cycle is paused. Make sure you have pressed the "Start" button to begin the cycle.

    • 2). Wait for a few minutes before touching the controls or opening the door. Washing machines may pause for periods of the cycle to fill with water, drain, reduce suds or soak clothes. Check you have programmed the washing machine to perform a spin cycle. Many washing machines can be programmed to soak clothes for a short time or for the duration of the cycle. Check your laundry soap instructions to determine the correct usage amounts.

    • 3). Break the wash load in half by removing some of the heaviest items from the drum. The drum needs to be properly balanced and within its weight restriction for the washing machine to operate safely. The washer will not spin if it thinks the weight of the saturated clothes will damage the motor.

    • 4). Open your fuse or breaker box and check for signs of trouble. Blown fuses or tripped breakers can cause the washing machine to behave erratically, turning on and filling but not spinning. Replace any blown fuses or reset any tripped breakers before trying your wash again.
