Hydrotherapy has been used to heal people with conditions for a long time now. It is also a great way to relieve stress. This therapy is based on three basic principles:
- Heat – this is essential to dilate blood vessels and increase circulation in the body. When circulation is increased, it follows that enzymes and endorphins are enabled to work more rapidly and efficiently on a person's muscles and joints. Warmer water induces vasodilation, basically drawing blood into the target tissues. Increasing the blood flow helps in delivering the needed oxygen and nutrients and at the same time eliminating cell wastes. Warm water also decreases muscle spasms, relieves pain, increase range of motion and relax tense muscles. And because of the heat, cells will easily rid themselves of metabolic waste, which will be replaced by oxygen and the body's natural nutrients.
- Buoyancy – When a person's body is suspended in water, the weight becomes 90% less than on land. Naturally, specific gravity is reduced, and pressure on the spine, muscle groups, ligaments and joints are eased. This can help alleviate pain because undue force upon the body is dramatically lessened especially when combined with heat and massage.
- Hydro-massage – This is the most critical principle in hydrotherapy. All body systems benefit when body receives a hydro-massage. Muscle spasm and pain are caused by poor posture, injury and stress. Hydro-massage stimulate and relax trigger points, which are highly sensitive nodules in the muscles. Water temperature coupled with agitation or vibration against the skin, can soothe and relax muscles. If a person also wants to improve flexibility, increase circulation and provide generally restorative benefits to the body systems, then massage is a good way to go.
Hydrotherapy is more than an unparalleled method of relieving stress and stress-related conditions such as high blood pressure, headaches and chronic pain. It benefits every system of the body, including the skeletal, respiratory, neuromuscular and circulatory systems.
