- 1). Apply a thin layer of tomato juice to any affected surface in your yard, including lawn furniture, sheds and garden decorations. The tomato juice has a high acid level, which may damage cloth and other items. Let the tomato juice sit for 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse away. The acid level helps neutralize the scent of the skunk's spray.
- 2). Wipe down any hard surfaces, such as plastic or metal, with distilled white vinegar. The acidity in the distilled white vinegar helps to further neutralize the smell of the skunk and tone down the scent. Rinse the surfaces with clean water.
- 3). Combine 1 qt. hydrogen peroxide with 2 tbsp. dish soap and one box baking soda in a plastic bucket. Apply the mixture to your outdoor areas with a nylon brush and gently rub into the surface. The Rutherford County Government website recommends letting the mixture dry in the sun, but you can also rinse it off.
- 4). Treat fabric and cloth surfaces, including the cushions of your lawn furniture, with the same solution of dish soap and hydrogen peroxide. Add a few tbsp. distilled white vinegar into the mixture and soak the fabrics in the solution. Remove from the liquid and lay out to dry in the sun.
- 5). Repeat the process as needed, depending on the severity of the spray. Once each item dries, check it carefully for any signs of lingering skunk spray. If the smell is still there, treat once again with the tomato juice, white vinegar and then hydrogen peroxide mixture. Repeat as many times as needed to completely remove the smell.
