- 1). Sand about 2 inches on one end of the copper pipe with the emery cloth. Sand it until the pipe is shiny and clean.
- 2). Sand the inside of one of the ends of the elbow connector with the emery cloth until it is shiny clean.
- 3). Apply flux to both the sanded end of the pipe and the sanded inside of the connector, using the brush. Apply an even coat.
- 4). Insert the end of the pipe with the flux, into the end of the elbow connector with the flux and twist about 90 degrees to ensure the pipe and connector in tight within each other. Clamp the pipe into the vise to hold it steady while you solder the connector to the pipe.
- 5). Turn on the flow of propane to the torch and light it with the lighter. Adjust the flow knob until you have a blue flame out the end of the torch. Heat the end of the pipe and connector until the flux melts and begins to bubble. Heat the pipe all around the connection to ensure it is evenly hot.
- 6). Apply the solder to the joint on the top of the pipe. The heat and capillary action will draw or suck the solder around and into the joint, sealing the pipes together.
- 7). Wipe off any excess solder with the emery cloth.
