Ventilation Ideas for a Grow Tent

    Purpose of Grow Tents

    • The purpose of grow tents is to provide a small, controllable environment for plants to grow. Some of the typical features of grow tents include highly reflective walls made of substances like Mylar that prevent light from escaping or entering, washable walls, floor and ceiling to minimize odor buildup and thermal insulation to keep plants warm. Lastly, of course grow tents feature holes that can be connected with a source of ventilation so that air does not become stagnant.

    Fans and Blowers

    • Indoor plant-growing operations have special ventilation needs that nature takes care of outside. Plants need air circulation to remain healthy, and indoor plant lights generate excess heat that needs to be dispersed. In-line fans and blowers solve both problems. They are called "in-line" because a flexible aluminum duct connects the fan or blower directly to the grow tent through preformed 4- or 6-inch holes. This benefits the planets inside the tent by blocking influences outside it from interfering.

    Lower-Cost Alternative

    • As a lower cost alternative, a normal square fan or round, circulating fan can be used. However, if you choose to ventilate with a regular fan then you must be aware of issues this can cause. Grow tents are sealed because that keeps undesirable contaminants like mold and insects outside of the system, as well as giving plants healthy, even and uninterrupted day and night cycles. While a regular fan not connected to the tent via a duct may save some money, it may lead to other costs in the form of the plant's health and its production capability.

    Outdoor Ventilation

    • Outdoor grow tents can be likened to smaller, more modular forms of greenhouses. In a system like this, a clear tarp covers the grow area to maintain humidity and allow sunlight to energize the plants. If the outdoor tent does not have a source of electricity nearby, then ventilation will need to come from the wind. Therefore, be sure to set up the tent in an area with a sufficient breeze. If you are creating your own tent, puncture a number of small holes on the sides to allow air to circulate and pass through.
