- 1). Drill a hole in the middle of the wood beams (joists) of your ceiling for your wire. Use the drill and the 3/4-inch wood drill bit to open up a path for your wiring. Make the path as straight as possible for easier wiring.
- 2). Insert the sheathed electrical wire through the path you drilled. Secure the wire in place with the wire clips. Pull the cable tight against the wooden beams and hammer in a wire clip every eight inches.
- 3). Install the electrical box where you want to the fixture to be. The method of installing the electrical box varies by style. Most commonly used boxes have tacks on the box so that you just hammer the box against the joist and the tacks will hold it in place. The electrical box needs to hang 1/2 inch below the wooden beam so it ends up flush with finished 1/2-inch drywall.
- 4). Insert the electrical wire in the electrical box that you want to wire. Push open and pull off the raised metal circle, called a knockout, on the electrical box with a screwdriver. Push the pressure electrical box wire clamp into the open knockout. Pull the wire through the wire clamp leaving approximately five inches of wire in the electrical box to connect the fixture.
