- 1). Use plastic dropcloths to shield the floor. Sand existing varnish from the windowsill trim, using a power sander. Stop when the sill looks dull.
- 2). Wipe sawdust from the sill trim, using tack cloths. Cover surfaces adjacent to the sill, using painter's tape.
- 3). Apply a light coat of stain to the windowsill trim, using a natural-bristled brush. Wipe the wet stain from the saturated wood, using cloth rags. Allow the sill to dry for four hours.
- 4). Wash the brush with mineral spirits. Apply a light coat of varnish to the sill trim, using the natural-bristled brush. Do not apply too much or sagging will result. Allow the sill to dry for four hours.
