For writing style, a celluloid fountain pen cannot be beaten. Because the flow of ink differs between letters and because of a person's individual natural cursive style, a lot of personality can appear in handwriting produced from a fountain pen. With a ballpoint pen, ink flow is regulated so each letter is uniform. If you want to imbue your handwriting with your own personality, a celluloid fountain pen is a good way to go.
Celluloid pens have long been the more stylish pen--however, in recent years ballpoint makers have released pens which are more fashionable than the plain plastic ballpoint. - Advocates of celluloid pens say that they are more comfortable to use than a ballpoint pen. With a ballpoint pen, you have to press down to get the ink to flow, which puts pressure on the arm and can cause the hand to become tired more quickly. The ink flows easily from a celluloid fountain pen, exerting less pressure on the hand and arm.
- While fountain pen writing is individual to the writer, the personal style it allows also allows for ink blots and marks. The freer flow of ink means that when the writer pauses, ink becomes thicker and may blot. The ink from a celluloid fountain pen also takes longer to dry, meaning that it can accidentally be blurred. The uniformity of the ballpoint pen makes writing clearer and, unless the ink is very cheap, will not not blot or leak.
- Ballpoint pens are very cheap and widely available. A quality celluloid pen can be expensive to buy and often is only available in stores which specialize in pens. However, even with the ink cartridges which you need to purchase for a celluloid pen, they can actually be quite a cost-effective purchase. As the pen itself will last for a long time, it will not need to be replaced as often as a ballpoint pen which are mostly designed to be disposable.
- Most ballpoint pens are made from plastic and are easily broken or shattered. A celluloid pen is very hard-wearing and can take being dropped or stepped on much better than a ballpoint pen can. Celluloid is an extremely tough material which substantially hardens once it has been cooled, so it is almost impossible to break a celluloid pen.
