Troubleshooting Child Safety Locks on a 1989 Mazda 626

    • 1). Open one of the rear doors on the Mazda 626.

    • 2). Look on the inside panel of the door. You'll see the latch that effectively closes and opens the door, as well as a small black switch. There will be a stamp above the switch with "Child Safety Lock" written on it. When the switch is in the down position, the lock is off.

    • 3). Push the child safety lock switch up to turn the rear door's safety lock on. Repeat this with the other rear door of the vehicle.

    • 4). Shut both of the doors and lock the car.

    • 5). Try to open both of the rear doors from the inside of the car. If either door opens, the locks are broken and you'll need to take your vehicle to a Mazda dealership or mechanic to be fixed. If neither door opens, continue to Step 6.

    • 6). Unlock the doors from the driver seat. Try to open both of the rear doors from the inside of the car. The safety locks are designed to not open even when the car is unlocked. If either door opens, the locks are broken and, yes, you'll need to take the 626 to a Mazda dealership or mechanic to be fixed. If the rear doors stay locked, continue to Step 7.

    • 7). Unlock the doors from the driver seat. Try to open both of the rear doors from the outside of the car. Because the locks are designed to open only from the outside, you should be able to open the doors. If you cannot open the unlocked rear doors, the locks are faulty and you will have to ease on over to a Mazda dealership or mechanic to be fixed. If you can open the back doors with the child locks on and the car unlocked, than the locks are working fine.
