How to Prep Metal & Repair Rust

    • 1). Drag the metal item outside and center it on a tarp. If the item can't be moved, place a tarp on the floor underneath it. Remove any pillows, glass or other non-metal items from the object. Tape off any nonmetallic surfaces you can't remove.

    • 2). Check that all connections on the sandblaster are tightened and the tank is filled with sand. Put on a sandblasting mask, protective gloves and safety goggles.

    • 3). Turn on the sandblaster's air compressor. Hold the wand about 1 foot away from the metal object and pull the trigger to shoot the sand. Move the sand spray back and forth over all surfaces on the metal object, using a smooth, even motion.

    • 4). Continue until you remove all paint and rust from the metal. Turn off the sandblaster's compressor once the work is completed.

    • 5). Sand the metal and rust away with sandpaper if a sandblaster is not available. Start with a coarse-grit sandpaper to remove the majority of the paint and rust. Switch to a fine-grit sandpaper to achieve a smoother finish.

    • 6). Remove the metal object and set it next to the tarp. Pour all sand particles, rust and paint chips on the tarp into a trash bag. Return the metal object to the tarp. Change out of your soiled clothing and protective gear.

    • 7). Dampen a clean rag with warm water. Wash all remaining sand particles from the surface of the object. Rinse the rag periodically as needed to clear excess sand.

    • 8). Dry the metal immediately after cleaning, using another clean rag. The metal is now free of rust and prepped for painting.
