How to Clean Stubborn Stains on Carpet

    • 1). Pour 1 cup warm water into a clean, empty spray bottle and add approximately 1/4 tsp. plain dishwashing soap. Allow the soap to dissolve into the water and spray the solution onto a clean, non-abrasive cloth.

    • 2). Dab your moist cloth over the stain. As a rule, do not spray the stain directly, as this may over-saturate the carpet, making it difficult to dry and creating a breeding ground for mold spores. Continue to dab the stain with your cloth until the stain dissolves. This simple approach can destroy even some of the most stubborn carpet stains, according to Good Housekeeping's website.

    • 3). Dampen a second cloth with cold water and dab the spot to remove the detergent. Do not soak the cloth, but lightly moisten it, preferably by spraying it with water from a second clean spray bottle.

    • 4). Dry the carpet. To effectively absorb all of the liquid, place a towel or a layer of paper towels over the damp spot and place a heavy object on top of the towel(s). Leave the objects overnight and remove them in the morning. You also can dry a lightly damp carpet by placing a dehumidifier next to the spot and turning it on until the carpet dries.

    • 5). Sprinkle baking soda over your carpet to remove any odors associated with your stain. This is particularly helpful for pet messes. Allow the baking soda to set for approximately 15 minutes then vacuum your carpet.
