Hi, my name is Javonne Blackley, and this is spotting with a dumbbell chest press. The purpose of using a spot during this particular exercise is to prevent injury. You want to make sure that you are standing behind your partner. You are going to squat down making sure your feet are at least shoulder width apart so that you are nice and stable and you're going to come down and support their elbows to make sure that they don't extend out too far. You're just going to guide them through the top of the motion and then come back down making sure that they are staying in correct form and if there is any struggle during the exercise, you're just going to help push them up, again making sure that they are in a controlled movement and doing their exercise properly. As they complete the movement, they're going to take that weight and bring it back down to their chest and if they are trying to do a forced rep then you are going to be touching them pretty much the whole time throughout the exercises just to help them, guide them, make sure they don't go out of control and use incorrect form.
