- 1). Remove all items from the kitchen shelves.
- 2). Spray the surface with a household cleaner that specifies mold- and mildew-removal on the label. Products that contain bleach are effective, as well. These cleaners remove any mildew from the area. Wipe the shelves with a damp cloth or sponge to remove residue from the cleaner.
- 3). Dry the shelves with paper towels. Start at the back of the shelf and move forward, toward your body. This will push any standing water forward. Wood surfaces are porous and may absorb water. Let wood shelves dry for several hours or even overnight. Leave any cabinet doors open to help air-dry the shelves. Run your hand over the shelf surface to ensure it is dry.
- 4). Lay a shelf liner over the shelf and draw an outline of its shape on the top of the liner using a marker. You can find shelf liners in cork, plastic or coated paper. Use scissors to cut the liner into the proper shape; the outline will serve as your guide. Follow the instructions provided with the liner for proper application. Some have adhesive backs while other just lay across the top of the shelf.
- 5). Wash all the items taken from the shelves. For dishes, hand wash with dish soap or run them through the dish washer. Wipe food containers, such as cans or boxes, with a slightly damp cloth or sponge.
- 6). Use a clean towel to thoroughly dry all items before returning them to the kitchen shelves. This is especially vital for dishes. Water dripping off damp dishes may be the cause of the wet shelf.
