- 1). Clean up your desktop. Remove shortcuts to programs you rarely use; they will still be accessible from the startup menu. Put files into a folder away from your desktop. This will not only clear up your desktop visually, but it will also allow your computer to run smoother.
- 2). Use the Add/Remove programs option in the Control Panel. The programs that you no longer use, such as an old version of a word processor, photo editor or even a game, are no longer needed and should be removed.
- 3). Clear your history, or cache. It takes up a bit of memory, and can cause you computer to run slower than need be.
- 4). Clean out your Recycle Bin. You may have already taken the step to delete the file, program or shortcut, but it still remains in that bin.
- 5). Go through your files. If you have no use of keeping old papers from years ago, delete them.
- 6). Move files to an external hard drive. If you wish to save your files but remove them from your computer and free up some memory, an external hard drive is an excellent choice. It can back up your files as well as keep your important documents secure from potential online threats.
- 7). Scan your computer for viruses. This will not only protect you but free up memory from the file or program and running it.
