- 1). Attach the two 1-inch-by-8-inch pieces of plywood to the 8-inch side of the 6-inch-by-8-inch piece of plywood, one on the front and another on the back, using one wood screw at each end. The 8-inch edges of all three pieces of wood should be flush with one another.
- 2). Attach the two 1-inch-by-5-inch pieces of plywood to the 6-inch side of the 6-inch-by-8-inch piece of plywood, one on the front and another on the back, using one wood screw at each end. Make sure the edges of all three pieces are flush with one another along the 6-inch side. There should now be an L-shaped frame on the front and back of the 6-inch-by-8-inch piece.
- 3). Place one side of the template against the bottom corner of the opening edge of an upper cabinet door. The inside corner of 1-inch pieces should be flat against the outside corner edge of the door. It is important that the 1-inch pieces each sit snugly against the bottom and outer edge of the cabinet door. This placement of the template will be used to mark the location of holes when installing hardware.
- 4). Measure from bottom of upper cabinet door up to center of where knob will be installed, typically 2 inches above.
- 5). Measure from opening edge of door toward hinge side to center of where knob will be installed. This measurement is typically centered on the decorative panel that runs along the outside edge of most cabinet doors. If the cabinet doors are flat, the measurement is typically 1 1/2 inches from the edge of the door.
- 6). Hold the template so a corner, where the 1-inch pieces of plywood meet, is on the bottom right-hand side. Let the inside corner of the 1-inch pieces represent the bottom corner along the opening edge of the upper cabinet door.
- 7). Measure from the inside corner of the 1-inch pieces to the horizontal measurement obtained in Step 7 and make a mark. Draw a straight, vertical line at this mark that extends several inches.
- 8). Measure from the inside corner of the 1-inch pieces to the vertical measurement obtained in Step 6 and make a mark. Draw a straight, horizontal line at this mark that extends several inches. The point at which these two lines intersect should correspond with where the hardware will be centered.
- 9). Drill a hole, using a bit that is the same size as the screw for the knob, centered where the two lines intersect.
- 10
Verify the placement of the hole on the template is correct by placing the template against the corresponding bottom corner of the opening edge of an upper cabinet door. Use a pencil to trace a circle through the drilled hole onto the cabinet door. - 11
Flip the template over and place against the bottom corner of the opening edge of a cabinet door that opens in the opposite direction. Use a pencil to trace a circle through the drilled hole onto the cabinet door. - 12
Use the level and measuring tape to make sure these two pencil marks line up.
