- 1). Turn off the power to your vent hood and range, and open the housing for the filter. The filter may be held in place with clips, a drop down door or a metal frame with screws. Place the filter in hot, soapy water to soak. If your unit contains a charcoal filter, do not wash it--it should be replaced when dirty.
- 2). Place a large trash bag over the top of your range to catch any drips. Dip a cleaning rag into the soapy water, wring it out and thoroughly wipe down the inside and outside of the hood. Loosen any stuck-on dirt with a small, plastic scraper. Wipe down the fan's blades. If they have stuck-on dirt, gently scrub them with a small toothbrush. Take care not to bend the blades or allow liquid into the fan.
- 3). Mix your own degreaser if you prefer. Mix equal parts of water and ammonia, add a short squirt of degreasing dish washing liquid and shake gently. If that is not adequate, coat the inside of the unit with a thick paste made of baking soda and water. Allow the mixture to soak for 30 minutes. Wash it off with a damp rag using circular polishing motions.
- 4). Scrub the mesh filter gently with a brush, rinse and allow it to dry thoroughly. Reassemble your vent hood and discard the trash bag. Polish the outside of your vent hood with your favorite household cleaner and turn on the power.
