- 1). Cast on 52 stitches, using a set of size 5 double-pointed needles. Knit one, purl one in standard ribbing for 8 rows. Divide the stitches and mark the divisions with a contrasting color of yarn tied around the knitting needles. Use 22 stitches for the back, 5 for each sleeve, and 20 for the front. Knit the stitches onto size 8 needles, completing one row of plain knitting.
- 2). Knit the first increase row starting from the back of one shoulder seam. Yarn over, knit one, yarn over, knit five, yarn over, knit one, yarn over, knit 20 stitches, yarn over, knit one, yarn over, knit 5, yarn over, knit one, yarn over, knit 22. This will bring you back around to the first increase. Knit one row of ordinary knit. Knit the second increase row, using the established pattern as a guide. Yarn over, knit one, yarn over, knit one and begin brioche pattern stitch.
- 3). Place the knitting needle through the stitch below the next stitch and knit both together; purl one, knit the stitch below the next stitch, purl one, knit the stitch below the next stitch, knit one. Do next increase: yarn over, knit one, yarn over, knit one. Work brioche stitch across front of sweater, increase for sleeve, knit in brioche across sleeve.
- 4). Knit the next increase pattern, knit in brioche stitch across the back of the sweater. If desired, when there are enough stitches on the needles to make it practical, knit the stitches off the double-pointed needles onto a circular needle. Continue following the pattern of increases and brioche stitches till the knitting reaches three inches below the armpit.
- 5). Place the sleeve stitches on stitch holders. Continue knitting the body of the sweater in brioche pattern till it reaches hip length. Switch to a knit one, purl one standard rib pattern. Knit two inches to form the bottom band. Crochet off in pattern.
- 6). Knit each sleeve in Brioche to three inches above the hand. Knit one decrease round of plain knitting, using the knit-two-stitches-together decrease method to reduce the number of stitches to a comfortable wristband size. Knit the wristbands in knit one, purl one standard ribbing.
