- 1). Measure the length and width of your table top using a tape measure. Determine how far you want the cloth to drop over the tabletop edge. Add the length of the drop plus 1/2 inch for seams to the tabletop length and width and record the measurements.
- 2). Fold the fabric lengthwise and lay it on a flat surface, aligning the edges on the length.
- 3). Place the short side of a metal, right-angle ruler along the length edges, 1 inch from the end of the folded fabric. Draw a chalk line across the fabric with tailor's chalk, using the long side of the metal ruler as a guide. Cut the fabric off at the chalk line.
- 4). Measure along the fabric length from the cut, using the recorded length measurement. Align the metal ruler according to the step two process and cut across the remaining fabric end. This squares the fabric, ensuring the fabric ends are straight.
- 5). Turn the edges of the tablecloth toward the back side of the fabric by 1/2 inch. Secure the hem with straight pins as you move around the entire tablecloth.
- 6). Machine-stitch each edge, removing the pins as you go, to create a 1/2-inch hem around the entire tablecloth.
- 7). Iron the tablecloth hems flat, using an iron set on the appropriate heating setting for the tablecloth fabric.
