Square in a Square Quilt Directions

    Cutting the Squares

    • 1). Decide how large you want your finished blocks to be. You will be cutting two different size squares for this block. The larger one is the center square, and the smaller ones will become the corner triangles.

    • 2). Cut the center square a half an inch larger than the finished size of the block. For example, if you want 8-inch blocks, cut the center squares 8 1/2 inches. For the smaller squares, divide the size of the finished block by two and add half an inch. Following the 8 inch example, the smaller squares should be cut at 4 1/2 inches.

    • 3). Cut one large square and four smaller squares for each block.

    Sewing the Blocks

    • 1). On the wrong side of the smaller squares, draw one line diagonally across each square.

    • 2). Place one of the small square pieces on top of the corner of one of the large square pieces with right sides together. The small square should be placed so that the outer edges of the small and large square are lined up, and the line on the back of the small square is running from edge to edge.

    • 3). Sew along the line. Trim off the outer edge, leaving 1/4-inch seam allowance.

    • 4). Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for all four corners. Press the corner triangles out. This completes one block.
