- 1). Install a pressure regulator, available at home improvement stores, according to package directions on a 1/2-inch or 5/8-inch soaker hose, which is also available from a home improvement store. Soaker irrigation is the process of applying water at low pressure so it effectively soaks into the soil. A pressure regulator keeps the water pressure from the house constant at 30 PSI (pounds per square inch) and provides a means of calculating the correct amount of water that is applied to the plants.
- 2). Lay the soaker hose down the row of tomato plants, parallel to and a few inches to the side of the plants, and cover it with organic mulch to a depth of 1 inch. Place an end cap on the far end of the soaker hose and connect the other end to the water faucet.
- 3). Irrigate the tomato plants by operating the soaker hose, for every 25 feet of garden row, at the pressure regulated rate of 30 PSI for one hour every other day. This method will keep the ground moist and apply 1 1/2 inches of water per week. When rain occurs, reduce the amount of watering.
