- 1). Plant in a location in full sunlight with well-draining soil. The gooseberry shrub does not tolerate a wet root system.
- 2). Work aged manure, compost and peat moss into the soil to a depth of 12 inches, using a shovel. The soil should feel crumbly and rich to the touch.
- 3). Dig a hole twice as large as the plant's root system. Plant the gooseberry shrub at the same depth it was planted in its nursery container.
- 4). Place the gooseberry shrub gently into the planting hole. Push the soil around the shrub's root system. Push the soil down firmly to remove any air pockets.
- 5). Water the gooseberry shrub deeply. Keep the shrub moist but not waterlogged.
- 6). Apply 2 to 3 inches of mulch around the plant's root system to keep it moist and cool. The mulch also will help reduce weed growth.
- 7). Fertilize the gooseberry mid-season with a general purpose 10-10-10 fertilizer, per label instructions.
- 8). Remove all blossoms as they appear on the gooseberry shrub. Pinching away the blooms will encourage the plant to develop a good root system during its first year. Allow the plant to produce blossoms in its second year.
