Career Path of a Music Producer

    Recording Engineer

    • During the recording session of a musical production, the engineer operates the soundboard and other electrical equipment. The recording engineer must also mix down the tracks, and coordinate with the producer and artist on a finished product.

    The Producer

    • The producer works primarily with artists and musicians as a creative leader. He should have a mastery of some musical skill and possess the ability to craft songs from concepts. The producer supervises the musical operation at all levels, and is often the financial executive in charge.

    Sound Technician

    • Sound technicians are responsible for transmitting high quality sound to the audience during a concert or live performance. They assist in setting up audio equipment, and work with performers during the sound check. A sound engineer might also work the soundboard during live performances to insure the best acoustic sound.

    Record Label Executive

    • A music producer with a proven track record can work with record labels to identify new talent. As a label representative, this producer signs new musicians, develops and packages their records, as well as secures new opportunities for existing clients.

    Sound Designer

    • A sound designer works closely with film and TV directors. They have to convey compelling images with their cameras, and rely on a sound designer to translate those images into musical cues. Sound designers can even make custom film scores by meshing noises and instruments together.

    Disc Jockey

    • A disc jockey, or DJ, selects musical tracks and plays them for an audience. A DJ can play live sets or announce live radio programs. A disc jockey can often even dictate musical trends.
