How to Scarify Macadamia Seeds

    • 1). File or use sandpaper to shave the outer layer of the seed until it breaks open and the embryo inside is visible. Don’t cut the outer shell, as the inner seed could get damaged.

    • 2). Place the seeds in a glass jar of water that is between 80 and 150 degrees Fahrenheit. Let it sit for one to three days, as the warmer the water, the less time it will need to set. Combine ½ cup of cider vinegar for every 2 cups warm water, and let them soak for 12 hours before rinsing and planting them, to speed the process.

    • 3). Make small indents, using a finger, in the planting container filled with potting soil. Make the indents to a depth that is roughly equal to the size of the seed. Plant the seed in the hole. Cover it with the soil so that it is even on top.

    • 4). Water the plant with the spray bottle so that the entire surface of the soil is wet. Place it in an area that stays at a minimum of 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
