- 1). Select two dark, rich colors to use in your decorations on the wall going up the stairs. Colors that work well include deep maroon, forest green, chocolate brown and dark navy. The two colors should be either harmonious -- located next to each other on the color wheel -- or complementary -- located opposite of each other on the color wheel.
- 2). Paint the wall of the hallway with one of the colors first. Use a thick, rich enamel, preferably semi-glossy or glossy. Apply a primer first then two coats of the enamel paint and allow it to dry thoroughly.
- 3). Apply square wood or acrylic wall panels, approximately 2-by-2-feet, in the other color you chose for your wall. Some panels also come in intricate patterns. The panels either come with self-adhesive backing or you must use a panel adhesive product to glue them in place. Apply them going down the staircase wall so that each corner touches. For example, if you place the first panel at the top of the staircase, place the next one so that its top corner meets with the bottom corner of the first one.
- 4). Continue this trend down the entire wall and press the panels firmly in place. Repeat this pattern for the other wall of the staircase as well.
- 5). Install a low-watt skylight at the ceiling that hovers above the staircase to cast a gentle light down along the walls.
