- 1). Pull the Kenmore washing machine's electrical plug from its wall outlet. Open the washing machine's lid.
- 2). Slip the tip of a flat-head screwdriver into the slot between the agitator and its cap. Twist the screwdriver's handle until the cap's retaining clip releases. If the cap sticks against the agitator, tap the side of the cap with the screwdriver's handle several times and pry the cap off the agitator with the screwdriver's blade. The cap covers the agitator's retaining bolt.
- 3). Place a 7/16-inch socket on the Kenmore washing machine's agitator retaining bolt. Turn the 7/16-inch socket counterclockwise with a ratchet until the agitator shaft releases the agitator retaining bolt.
- 4). Grip the bottom of the agitator on both sides of its shaft. Pull the agitator straight up, sliding the agitator off of its shaft.
- 5). Slip the center of a Kenmore spanner tool over the end of the agitator shaft, keeping the spanner wrench's lugs facing down. Set the spanner wrench on top of the spanner nut.
- 6). Rotate the spanner wrench until its lugs align with the spanner nut's slots -- the wrench will drop into place once the slots and lugs line up.
- 7). Twist the spanner wrench counterclockwise, loosening the spanner nut. If the nut will not spin, lightly tap the top of the spanner wrench with a hammer and retry the spanner wrench. After the spanner nut spins freely, remove the spanner wrench.
- 8). Twist the spanner nut counterclockwise by hand until the agitator shaft releases the nut. Slide the spanner nut off the agitator shaft.
