Ideas for Spice Racks

    Canisters

Purchase several small tin canisters from a homewares or organization store. You can get different sizes based on the types of spices you want. For example, you're likely to used garlic powder more frequently and in greater amounts than nutmeg, so nutmeg and similar spices can be stored in smaller tins. Purchase a small metal shelf insert, often available at the same store. Place the shelf insert on your kitchen counter and line up your spices both on top of and underneath the insert. If you've got a lot of spices, you can stack them on top of each other for extra storage space.

    Shoe Organizer

    • Re-purpose an over-the-door shoe organizer as a quick, DIY spice rack. Mount the shoe organizer to the inside of a pantry door and fill it with your favorite spices. Look for shoe organizers made of clear plastic or vinyl; these will allow you to see at a glance what spices you have. If you've got a big spice collection, keep your eyes peeled for organizers with extra rows or double pockets.

    Mesh Drawer Organizers

    • If you've got some free wall space in your kitchen, turn it into a home for your spices. Purchase several mesh drawer dividers from a home organization or big box store. Measure your wall's area before visiting the store so you know what size will fit best. Nail the drawer dividers to the wall in rows, using a level to ensure that the drawer dividers are straight. Fill them with your favorite spices and step back to admire your handiwork. If you like, you can outline and paint the area you'll be using before you attach the spice holders to give your DIY spice rack a polished, professional appearance.

    Magnetic

Turn empty wall space into a modern, stylish spice rack. Mount a sheet of stainless steel to an unused but easily accessible wall in your kitchen. Keep your cooking habits in mind when purchasing the sheet of steel; those with extensive spice collections may want a large sheet while those who stick to the basics can get away with a small strip. Collect plenty of small canning jars, baby food jars or watchmaker's cases. Glue neodymium magnets to the tops of the lids of each jar. You must use neodymium magnets since they'll be strong enough to support the weight of the jar without slipping. Label and fill each jar with spices. Attach them to the stainless steel sheet and voila! You've got a beautiful magnetic spice rack.
