- 1). Turn on your metal detector and hold it so the detector plate is parallel to and hovering a few inches from the ground.
- 2). Familiarize yourself with the sound your detector makes when it detects a metallic object. Place a piece of metal on the ground and pass the detector over it.
- 3). Walk slowly around your digging area, holding the detector in the proper position. Walk in long, straight rows so you can keep track of where you have already traveled. Stop as soon as you hear the detector pitch. Run the detector over the suspect area a few times to determine where the strongest sound is made.
- 4). Take the wider end of the pickaxe and dig up the ground where the detector sounded. Dig carefully, moving just an inch or so of ground at a time.
- 5). Stop digging occasionally and use your detector to make sure you are continuing to dig on target. Move the dirt around with your hands as you dig down to look for the gold until you find it.
