Deer can be a garden pest in rural, suburban and even urban gardens. To deter them, gardeners can plant flowers that deers do not like to eat. Verbena, forget-me-not, catmint, iris and calendula all have a taste that is unpleasant to deer. Being aware of a few deer-resistant flowers can help you keep your garden in good shape.

    Verbena

    • Verbena will bloom from spring to fall, and it is a very easy plant to take care of. In a frost-free location, it can be a perennial, but in most other climates, it is an annual plant that must be replaced every year. It needs between 8 to 10 hours of direct sunlight every day and should be planted in a spot with good drainage. It can produce mauve, pink, white, red or peach flowers.

    Forget-Me-Not

    • Forget-me-not is a small plant with flat five-petaled flowers that mostly comes in shades of blue or purple. It can be an annual plant or a perennial, depending on the conditions and the variety. It grows well in the shade and is fairly hardy.

    Catmint

    • Catmint is also known as nepeta, and it is a hardy member of the mint family. The green foliage features spikes of blue, pink, white and lilac. There are several varieties that show off the same color as lavender plants, and can be grown instead of lavender in places where lavender proves too frail. Plant this mint sparsely, as it can take over your yard.

    Iris

    • Irises are flowers that may come in white, yellow, red, orange, blue and purple, but there are some rarer varieties that also come in brown and black. This plant grows well in wooded areas with good drainage,. Trimming dead foliage and leaves back to a height of 4 to 5 inches can lead to good growth during the next growing season.

    Calendula

    • Calendula is more commonly known as the pot marigold, and this flower can be annual or perennial. This plant, which is not the same as the marigold, is a fast bloomer that appears in various shades of yellow, red and orange. Calendula is a versatile flower and thrives in sunny locations, though it adapts well to half-sunny locations. Plant it in rich, well-drained soil.
